Lake Hartwell is located in the southwestern section of the state of South Carolina and the northwestern corner of Georgia. The South Carolina Upcountry region is known as the Golden Corner of the state and lies at the foothills of the Appalachian mountains within a few hours drive of the Blue Ridge mountains. Bordered by the Sumter National Forest are the three Great Lakes of South Carolina- Lake Hartwell, Lake Keowee and Lake Jocassee.

The largest of the three by far is Lake Hartwell covering 56,000 acres with over 960 miles of shoreline and 80 recreation areas including 4 state parks with natural sand beaches. It is one of the top 3 recreation lakes in the country with 9.6 million visitors annually. Residents and visitors alike enjoy beautiful panoramas and calm, temperate waters for swimming, boating, sailing, canoeing, fishing and water skiing. A popular both rivers, streams and various waterfalls.

The lake spans Oconee, Anderson and Pickens counties. Capitalizing on the fertile soil and rich history of the area, Oconee County is the home of the South Carolina Apple Festival, the Oktoberfest celebration and the Spring Heritage Festivals which combined draw tens of thousands of visitors to the area on an annual basis. Key cities in the area are Anderson, Clemson (the university), Greenville and Spartanburg.

Lake Hartwell is one of the most accessible lakes in the nation located only a 90- minute drive from Atlanta, GA and less than 2 hours from Charlotte, NC and 1 hour from Greenville, SC. The area is within a 1-day drive of many of the major Northeastern and Southeastern metropolitan areas of the Eastern US.

The Hartsfield- Jackson Atlanta International Airport is one of the busiest passenger terminals in the world. Regional feeder airports are located in Columbia and Greenville/Spartanburg S.C., and Charlotte, N.C. and Chattanooga, TN.
